Banerjee said that the incidences were a reflection of the “tragic consequences of the BJP’s politics of fear” in a sharply worded post on X.

“One preventable tragedy after another has happened within 72 hours of the Election Commission’s announcement of the SIR exercise in Bengal — an exercise that was pushed through at the BJP’s insistence,” she wrote.

Banerjee claims that Pradeep Kar, 57, of Panihati, Khardaha, committed himself on October 27 and left a note saying, “NRC is responsible for my death.” A 63-year-old man from Dinhata in Cooch Behar allegedly tried suicide a day later out of fear of being harassed during the SIR procedure.
